THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM - The '59 Sound (Sideonedummy/Phonag)

Ich habe noch nie ein Album gehört, auf dem so viele Vornamen erwähnt wurden. Sänger Brian Fallon meint: "Man braucht Namen, um Geschichten zu erzählen". Dies ist nur einer der vielen Gründe, die "The '59 Sound" zu einem der authentischsten Gitarrenalben seit langem machen. Neben den herausragenden Melodien, der simplen, aber effektiven Gitarrenarbeit, zeitlosen Songs, die das Zeug zum Klassiker haben, etc... The Gaslight Anthem sind nicht eine Band, der der Stempel "cool" aufgedrückt werden kann. So sehen sie nicht aus, und ihr Sound ist auch nicht gerade das, was momentan als populär gilt. Und trotzdem, oder vielleicht gerade deswegen, geben The Gaslight Anthem all denen Hoffnung, denen die Britrock-Hype-Bands zum Hals heraushängen. Denn "The '59 Sound" hat das, was den meisten Hype-Bands felht: Hits. Und zwar gleich zwölf davon. Ohne Ausnahme. Kein einziger Ausfall.

Viele sehen in den vier Jungs schon die Nachfolger von Hot Water Music. Eine Schublade, die nur bedingt zutrifft. Den neben Punkrock scheinen auch Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty oder auch The Weakerthans bei The Gaslight Anthem hoch im Kurs zu stehen. "Here's Looking At You" zum Beispiel, würde auch als eine absolute Weakerthans-Glanztat durchgehen. Wäre da nicht die einzigartige Stimme von Brian Fallon, die natürlich meilenweit von John K. Samson entfernt ist.

Und da ich gerade eben erst die Rezi von The Hold Steady gelesen habe, gilt auch hier: Das ist ehrliche Rockmusk. Und nein, auch hier nicht im Stile, wie die Schweizer Illustrierte die Musik von Golä bezeichnet, sondern eine der besten Platten dieses Jahres.
