THE DECEMBERISTS - The Crane Wife (Capitol/EMI)

Grosses Theater.

Clevere Pop-Musik ist meine Mucke der Stunde! Eben erst begeisterten mich The Shins mit "Wincing The Night Away" restlos (Fabio wird seine Meinung dazu demnächst an dieser Stelle kund tun) und nun lassen mich die Decemberists jauchzen vor Freude. "Grosses Kino", so lautet eine deutsche Redewendung, die man gerne mal braucht wenn man seiner Begeisterung Ausdruck verleihen will, ohne dies weiter begründen zu können. Nun, im Fall von The Decemberists wäre "grosses Theater" angebrachter, denn die Decemberists haben eine geradezu melodramatische Ader, die sie ihre Songs mehr inszenieren denn einfach spielen lässt und der sie auch auf "The Crane Wife" freien Lauf lassen. Hatte der Vorgänger "Picaresque" den umwerfenden, 9-minütigen "Mariner's Revenge Song" zu bieten, so gibt's nun das dreiteilige, sich über 12 Minuten erstreckende Epos "The Island", in dessen Mittelteil plötzlich eine Orgel aufheult, die The Decemberists einen Moment lang wie Jethro Tull oder Emerson Lake & Palmer klingen lässt (im Prinzip ist dieser rund 5-minütige Part dafür verantwortlich, dass viele Reviewer The Decemberists nun ins Prog-Fach stecken wollen).

Eine eindrückliche Inszenierung, die The Decemberists mit "The Crane Wife" auffahren. Dies tun sie lustvoll, gewitzt und unterhaltsam. Der Spass am Verkleiden blitzt immer wieder auf. So legen The Decemberists bei "The Perfect Crime #2" das Talking Heads-Kostüm an, in "When The War Came" mimen sie eine Rockband im Stile von Jimmy Eat World und im "Summersong" kokettieren sie mit netter Mitschunkel-Pop-Musik. Im Kern sind sie aber eigentlich eine liebenswerte Folk-Pop-Combo, die sich mit Charme und Schalk im reichhaltigen Fundus der Pop- und Rockmusik bedient. Mein momentaner Favorit ist übrigens "Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then)", ein Duett mit der bezaubernden Laura Veirs.
