BUILT TO SPILL - You In Reverse (Warner)

Sechs Saiten für die Ewigkeit.
Fünf Jahre sind verstrichen seit Built To Spills letztem Lebenszeichen "Ancient Melodies Of The Future". Fünf Jahre in denen Rockmusik die Hitparaden zurückerobert hat und eine heisse Band von der nächsten, noch heisseren abgelöst worden ist. Was das mit Built To Spill zu tun hat? Gar nichts. Die Truppe um Doug Martsch ist tief im amerikanischen Gitarren-Rock verwurzelt und stellt nachwievor sowas wie das fehlende Glied zwischen Neil Young und Dinosaur Jr dar. Um Trends braucht sie sich als solches nicht zu kümmern.
Konkret bedeutet dies etwa, dass im achtminütigen Opener "Goin' Against Your Mind" der Schlagzeuger durchgehend mehr oder weniger denselben Beat spielt (nach vier Minuten wird er zunächst leise, setzt dann ganz aus und kehrt eine Minute später umso treibender wieder zurück), der Song auf gerade mal zwei Akkorden basiert, der Gesang erst irgendwann nach zwei Minuten ganz unauffällig einsetzt und es doch zu keinem Zeitpunkt langweilig wird, da sich Gesangs- und Gitarrenmelodien auf wundersame Art und Weise abwechseln, umgarnen, ergänzen. Gegen Schluss klingen die Gitarren fast so wie bei Doug Martschs früherer Band Treepeople und als Indie-Gitarren-Aficionado fühlt man sich dem Himmel sehr nahe. "Traces" beginnt zurückhaltender, über einer schlichten Akkordfolge entfaltet sich eine kurze, wehmütige Gitarrenmelodie, im Hintergrund erklingt ein Glockenspiel. Nach rund drei Minuten verdichtet sich das Spiel zunehmend, bis schliesslich der Song mit der Intro-Melodie ausklingt. Viel besser als mit diesem Doppelpack hätten Built To Spill ihr neues Album gar nicht beginnen können.
Mit "Conventional Wisdom", den man schon vom Basketball-Spiel mit Doug Martsch kannte, folgt an sechster Stelle dann sowas wie ein "Indie-Rock-Instant-Hit", mit niedlicher Melodie am Anfang und furiosem J Mascis-Solo am Ende. Sicher der eingängigste Song des Albums, wenn auch nicht unbedingt der beste. Track Nr. 8 ("Mess With Time") hingegen ist der ungewöhnlichste Song des Albums und ich muss zugeben, dass ich ihn in einer früheren Version dieser Rezension als "richtig schlechten Song" bezeichnet hatte. Nach drei langen Minuten mit zwei nur von einem Halbton-Schritt getrennten Akkorden und orientalischem Gitarrengenudel wechselt der Song abrupt in einen Ska-Part, wie man ihn von mediokren Punkbands kennt. Aber die Leadgitarre beginnt eine eigenartige Magie zu entfalten, der Song kriegt einen osteuropäischen Touch und ich find Kollege Indieaners Bezeichnung "Gipsy-Teil" mittlerweile passender als "Ska-Part". Je öfter ich mir den Schluss des Songs anhöre und der Gitarrenmelodie zu folgen versuche, umso stärker zieht sie mich in ihren Bann.
"You In Reverse" ist ein entspanntes, zeitloses Gitarrenalbum für Leute, die sich zum Musikhören gerne Zeit nehmen und die von der Suche nach dem nächsten Pop/Rock-Hit genug haben, ihr für eine Weile den Rücken zuwenden möchten oder sich gar nie darauf eingelassen haben.
